L’acier \u00e0 coupe rapide (en anglais High Speed Steel) se caract\u00e9rise par une grande r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 l’usure, une grande duret\u00e9, une r\u00e9sistance au revenu et une r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la chaleur allant jusqu’\u00e0 600\u00b0C. Les rev\u00eatements en nitrure de titane augmentent encore ces propri\u00e9t\u00e9s et am\u00e9liorent la r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la corrosion. Les corps de coupe en acier rapide permettent une vitesse de coupe \u00e9lev\u00e9e et pr\u00e9sentent de grands espaces de coupe. Ils sont insensibles aux chocs et aux vibrations, ce qui permet d’obtenir des angles de bec plus petits et une faible rugosit\u00e9.
